The idea that the film needs to be authentic is trash, the notion that it must be authentic or else the film is terrible and worthy of scorn is shit.
I heard Robert Redford, who was in the 1974 adaptation of The Great Gatsby, being interviewed recently, and he said, what’s the point of making an authentic adaptation? If you want authentic, you already have the book; if the film doesn’t do something different, it’s a failure. I endorse this position, and also this clip.
